Helping beginners learn to shoot

Live-fire open-bay event videos

Firearms Instructors:  Participation in live-fire events is the end goal for training new shooters.

These videos are from training events we've helped produce during the past few years.  What you see here are live-fire exercises intended for intermediate-level shooters.  This is what our beginners aspire to as they learn to shoot.

All of the videos were filmed at actual training events, in open tactical bays at local indoor ranges.  Clearly events like these could just as easily have been staged in outdoor range shooting bays.

Developed in association with Armed Defense Training Association, a Washington State nonprofit gun club founded in 2011.  ADTA volunteers helped create this training curriculum and have taught hundreds of beginners how to shoot.

We have lots more live-fire videos on our New Shooter 101 YouTube Channel

Live-Fire Training: Get your heart pumping, then quickly engage threats (6:33)

If you are ever in a shooting situation, it is likely you would be under stress with your heart pounding.  In this scenario our instructor simulates this by placing the trainees under stress before confronting a threat.  The trainees begin by striking against a martial arts paddle.  You will see in the video that they are in a rotational sequence.  This means each one has been striking for perhaps a couple of minutes before moving downrange to shoot.

Live-Fire Training: Defending against an advancing threat from your car (6:40)

Suppose you are sitting in your car and a bad guy who wants to carjack you quickly approaches with his gun drawn and pointed at you.  What should you do?  You have only a split second to make your shoot-no-shoot decision.  If you truly believe your life is threatened then it is time to start shooting.

Our instructor has set up three different configurations to shoot from:  Through the left and right windows, and through the windshield.  Watch as our trainees shoot at the very creative drop-down moving targets that are rapidly approaching them.

Live-Fire Training: Confronting a threat in a restaurant without shooting your companion (6:01)

In this scenario our instructor places the trainees into a restaurant situation in which they are dining with a companion.  A shooter enters the restaurant and starts shooting.  If you are ever in a situation like this you would likely want to quickly start shooting back.  The problem is that your companion is in the line of fire.  Watch the video to find out how our trainees deal with this in three different table arrangements.

Live-Fire Training:  Shooting in prone position - 3 variations (7:25)

In this video our trainees practice shooting from a prone position.  Our instructor leads them through three variations of this exercise:
— Standard prone.  Best for quick shots.
— Roll to side prone.  Very good if you have enough time to get into this position.
— Monopod “golf-grip”.  Good for precise or distance shots.

Live-Fire Training: Combo drill - Falling plates, prone, shoot on the run (2:42)

In this video our trainees run a course of fire that includes:
— Shooting at falling plate targets.  They get eight shots to drop six targets.
— Shooting from a prone position.  They have the choice of the three positions demonstrated in one of our previous videos.
— Shooting on the run.  In this segment they engage a threat while shooting sideways.

Training with New Shooter 101:  From Dry-Fire Practice to Live-Fire Shooting (1:28)

In this video our trainee learns to clear failure-to-fire malfunctions while moving from cover to cover.  She begins with dry-fire training, then puts the skills to use by live-fire shooting in an open tactical bay.  The point is that dry-fire and live-fire go hand-in-hand in developing your defensive shooting skills.

Hit the Ground, Then Come Up Shooting! – Live-Fire Training in Seattle WA (3:02)

Suppose you are engaged in a deadly confrontation and get knocked to the ground.  This training exercise helps prepare you for this situation where you need to recover quickly and come up shooting!

Active Shooter at the Mall (1:00)

In this exercise our trainees confront an active shooter at the mall.  A shopper has been shot and our trainees work as a team to rescue the victim.  One of them lays down covering fire while the other administers first aid and carries the victim to safety.  Our instructor uses a laser to illuminate targets that pose active threats, thus challenging the trainee to be situationally aware at all times.

Turn and Shoot Exercise (2:28)

In an actual defensive situation it's unlikely that everyone will be standing still. In this video our instructor draws on his martial arts background to show our live-fire practice attendees how to hit the target while their bodies are in motion. Take careful note of his graceful footwork.

Shooting in Low Light Exercise (1:55)

Shooting in low light is a practical skill that can't be learned by going to the range on your own. In this video our instructor puts our shooters through the paces, showing them how to handle firearm and flashlight in synchronized motion.
